Review: In Ruins by Danielle Pearl

She wanted to start again. To be someone---anyone---different .

Freedom. When Carleigh Stanger thought of college, that was the word that came to mind. Freedom from her unhappy home life. Freedom from high school mistakes. Freedom from the memory of that terrible morning. Only instead of bringing a sweet escape, Carleigh's first campus party traps her in the scornful gaze of the last person she wants to see, Tucker Green.

It wasn't long ago that being close to Carleigh was everything Tucker wanted. But that was before he realized she was just another scheming girl who'd do whatever it took to get her way.

Even lie to the guy she claimed to love. Unfortunately while Tucker's brain remembers the pain Carleigh caused, his body only remembers the pleasure . . .

Carleigh Stranger has always had a connection with Tucker Green. They've known each other since high school and has started dating then.
We see chapters both in past and present as we get a feel for Carleigh and Tucker's budding relationship from their high school years, their evolution to lovers from being friends.

Tragedy strikes these two young lovers as they navigate their way from friends to lovers and this tears them apart in the worst way.
Jumping to the present, Carleigh is dying to shake off her past and all the hurt she felt then. College, to her, was an escape. It represented the freedom she was dying to have from her past and the guilt she felt.
Coincidentally, Tucker Green, Carleigh's ex-boyfriend, attends the same college she applied. Though they both try to steer clear of each other, circumstances get the best of them and they even end up in the same class. Their connection is undeniable, but they try their best to shield themselves from hurt. Well, they say you can't avoid a person forever, and running into each other almost all the time frayed on their defenses and they slowly start to build a tentative friendship-of-sorts as they navigate familial relationships as well as their common friends at school.
and then BAM! A twist I didn't see coming happens...
What happens when the truth starts to unravel as their pasts starts to come back and haunt them? Can the truth save these two young people from breaking or will they forever stay In Ruins?
Danielle Pearl delivered such an emotional story of two young people trying to find their place in the world as well as in each others lives. She wrote their connection, their love so beautifully, I couldn't help but laugh with them and cry with them at their most hurtful moments. I couldn't help but feel for them at their helpless times.
She will twist your insides in suspense and crush your heart in two as Tucker and Carleigh face the challenges they encounter.
I was reeling when I reached the precipice of their story. I was at the edge of my seat as threats enter their lives.
"When you love a girl more than your own life, you don't let her go - not for anything, not even a motherfucking bullet."
I broke for Carleigh and her heartbreak concerning her parents. I also hurt for Tucker as his heart broke from betrayal.
I was literally in ruins for these two people who were too young to go through what they were subjected to and who had to grow up real fast because of it too.
I really liked every single part of this book, it was so realistic. The way Tucker felt and showed his love for Carleigh, the way these two characters were written, and the way they've been with each other. Their hot scenes were extremely hot (I loved them!), their chemistry was off the charts (and still is) and their feelings where so real, I felt them through every thought and action they both did.
An emotional read that will leave you in ruins but keep you begging for more.
